Our Mission |
 |
|
|
Education is our mission and to that end we provide a variety of
teaching conferences and other educational opportunities. |
 |
Educational Conferences |
 |
|
|
Core Conferences:
Held at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays each week. Topics are
from the American Board of Pediatrics with focus on Board related
material. All board topics are covered at least once during a 3 year
period while some are covered annually.
Morbidity & Mortality
Conference:
Highlights cases that pose educational opportunities in a
non-threatening forum. The focus is on examining systems of care an on
learning from medical mistakes.
Evidence Based Medicine /
Journal Club:
PL-2s present a CAT (critically appraised topic) to fellow residents
and faculty. The 3 best CATs of the year are also presented at Grand
Rounds each June.
Board Review / Zitelli Book
Clubs:
Held monthly. One chapter of Zitelli is assigned in advance. Residents
in teams answer PREP questions over the topic covered. A faculty member
from the featured subspecialties area is in attendance as a consultant.
Ethics Conference:
Monthly meetings focus on discussions of ethical principles
demonstrated by a case, a short story, or a recent news item.
Grand Rounds:
Grand Rounds are held every Thursday morning. Speakers include our own
faculty and regional / national leaders in the arena of pediatric
healthcare. Category I CME is available.
Morning Report:
Held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00-8:30 am. Upper level residents
present interesting cases with a faculty moderator. The emphasis of
this conference in on differential diagnosis.
Additional Opportunities for
Residents:
- PL-1s host a quarterly "Intern
Interesting Case" noon conference with the Chairman.
- PL-1s each present a topic as part of a cultural competency series.
- PL-2s and PL-3s - while on each of the
selective rotations (GI, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Neurology) give a
formal Power Point presentation (starting with a case and including a
literature review).

 |
Mentors |
 |
|
|
Every resident chooses a faculty mentor, who serves to promote education and facilitate professional
and personal growth on a one to one basis. Mentors may also assist residents with research and publications. |
 |
Research Opportunities |
 |
|
|
We have numerous faculty members actively involved in both
basic science and clinical research. Residents are encouraged to pair
with a mentor in their particular field of interest to facilitate
research projects and eventual publications.
The Department of Pediatrics holds an annual Research Day where faculty, fellows, and residents present posters on their work. Each resident is expected to choose a "personal project" and to take a poster on that project to Research Day at some point during their 3 year residency. Projects for presentation may include case reports, advocacy projects or quality improvement projects as well as more traditional research projects.

Educational Website |
 |
|
|
We are very excited about our new educational website!
From computers in the hospital or at home, residents can access the
website which posts the current conference and call schedules, as well
as providing rapid links to other important sites such as the ACGME
Case Log system and the American Academy of Pediatrics "Pedialink".

In addition every rotation has its own work space where residents can
access rotation goals and objectives and an orientation document
listing times of clinics, rounds, and meetings. On some work spaces,
more extensive material is available including in-house
guidelines/protocols, review articles, PREP questions to allow self
assessment, and links to national sites such as the CDC and NCI. |
 |
Pediatric Pratice Model |
 |
|
|
Pediatric Practice Model (PPM) serves as our resident continuity
clinic, with each resident providing care one half-day per week.
Faculty to resident ratio is typically 1:3.
With grant funding from the Administration
on Development Disabilities, we have recently set up a medical home
model within PPM clinic. Through this program all residents will have
hands-on training in managing some patients with complex disabilities
and in helping their families gain access to community resources.
As an option, residents may choose to do
their continuity clinic at the Latino Clinic, which is a satellite
clinic primarily serving the Hispanic population in Oklahoma City.
