The combined Internal Medicine-Pediatric Program at the University of Oklahoma is designed to develop excellent physicians through comprehensive training in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.

Our training is divided among four hospitals all located within a four-block radius. The hospitals include OU Medical Center Everett Tower, Presbyterian Tower, and The Children’s Hospital, as well as Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Oklahoma is a friendly, beautiful state and its residents are fortunate to have an extremely low cost of living as well as a very low crime rate.

Our Program

Program Information
The Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Program was established in 1989 and has continued to grow and improve. The program is currently funded for 12 residents total. Residents currently attend the core conferences in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics on a weekly basis. Additionally they attend biweekly board review sessions on Fridays where topics are covered simultaneously in each discipline.

The University of Oklahoma Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Program is equally supported from both departments. We are excited to have an associate residency director that is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Stacie Rougas, MD. The Department of Medicine includes over 100 full-time faculty representing general Internal Medicine and each of the subspecialties of Medicine. The faculty in the Department of Pediatrics is a very diverse one, spanning 14 sections and over 80 physicians.

Electronic Residency Application Service
We participate in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) provided by the AAMC. For further information, please contact these organizations directly, or talk with your medical school’s dean office.

Our Brochure

Noon Conference
The Internal Medicine-Pediatric residents attend the Pediatric Core Conferences on Monday/Wednesday and the Medicine Core Conferences on Tuesday/Thursday. Board Review is held on two Fridays a month. The remaining two Fridays are reserved for Resident Caucus, Morbidity and Mortality Conference, and Autopsy Conference. This conference schedule allows for an optimal combined educational experience.

Morning Conference
Internal Medicine has case presentations every Monday and Tuesday mornings. These are excellent teaching sessions presented by Dr. Michael Bronze, Chairman of Medicine, and Dr. Brent Brown, Medicine Residency Director. Journal Club is presented every Wednesday morning by the Department of Medicine. The Pediatric Program has a morning conference focusing on both student and resident case presentations with active involvement of pediatric faculty.

Board Review
A combination of Internal Medicine and Pediatric topics are covered each month. The residents are given reading assignment topics for each week. The residents meet and answer both MKSAP and PREP questions. Board review discussions are directed by the Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Chief residents or the Associate Residency Director.

Resident Presentations
MP-2: Pediatric Evidenced Based Medicine Conference
MP-3: Internal Medicine House staff Conference (30 minutes)
MP4: Pediatric Noon Conference
Internal Medicine House staff Conference (1 hour)

Mentors
Every resident chooses a faculty mentor, who serves to promote education and facilitate professional and personal growth on a one-on-one basis. Mentors assist residents with research and publications as well.

Research Opportunities
The University of Oklahoma has numerous faculty members actively involved in both basic science and clinical research. Residents are encouraged to pair with a mentor in their particular interest to facilitate research projects and eventual publications.

Continuity Clinic
Resident continuity clinic is held one half day per week. During the first 2 years clinics are completed on the OU Health Science Center alternating weeks between Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. During the 3rd and 4th years the residents may have the opportunity to complete their continuity clinic with an Internal Medicine-Pediatrics community physician. This allows the residents to experience both Internal Medicine and Pediatric patients simultaneously.
