In Memory of a Life of Generosity & Service
Patricia Price Browne was a highly respected and creative worker
for the causes of children’s health who stayed true to her
personal mottos to “spend time wisely with people and projects
that matter” and “work and play out of a sense of love
and joy, not duty”. Her innate goodness and straightforward
honesty attracted many to her side. The people who mattered most
to her were her husband, Henry, and their two children, Matthew
and Whitney, but her discipline and dedication allowed her to devote
significant energy to community causes. Her special commitment was
to enhance the health of women and children and for these causes,
especially; she was a leader with a gift for turning dreams into
reality. She is remembered for her ability to frame the most complex
discussions in the context of, “What is the right thing to
do.”
Patricia captured the meaning of what it meant to be a quality
person. Her commitment to health care was constantly reflected in
the numerous ways she provided leadership for causes that enhanced
the health of women and children. What an amazing record of active
participation she illustrated. Among her accomplishments:
- She was president of Children’s Medical Research Institute
and a founding board member, making a critical contribution to
this important organization, which strives to improve the health
of children through its support of research and education at the
Oklahoma Health Center
- She co-founded the OU Institute for Breast Health and served
many years as Vice President of its Advisory Board Executive Committee
- She founded the Friends of the Institute for Breast Health and
served as its first Chairman
- She led the extraordinarily successful campaign to create the
G. Rainey Williams Chair in Surgical Breast Oncology. This campaign
raised $2.25 million in private funds for the position. Matched
by the Oklahoma State Regents, this resulted in a $4.5 million
endowment, the largest at the University of Oklahoma
- She co-founded the Oklahoma Breast Cancer Project, a statewide
registry and tissue bank for breast cancer research
- She co-chaired the Central Oklahoma Susan G. Komen Race for
the Cure and was a member of the Central Oklahoma Chapter of the
Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation
- She was a founder and Advisory Board member of the James Hall
Center for the Mind, Body, and Spirit at Integris Baptist Medical
Center and a longtime leader and advisor for Mercy Health Center
Because of her special commitment to health care, Patricia’s
friends and family support the Patricia Price Browne Prize in Biomedical
Ethics as a fitting memorial to her legacy. The emphasis in ethics
well reflects Patricia. Through her intellect and integrity, she
was able to see beyond the surface and focus on what was genuine
and ethical. Her compassion for serving others was based on providing
a better life for all. Patricia’s organizational skills, leadership
ability, fun disposition, which made her so enjoyable to be around,
enabled her to inspire creative ideas and solutions that were directed
toward making the world better.
