University
of Oklahoma President David L. Boren, OU Children’s
Physicians and several of their young patients gathered earlier
this month with state and local dignitaries to celebrate
the start of a bright new future for children’s health
care in Oklahoma. With a thumbs up and a yell of “tear
that building down,” they signaled the wrecking ball
operator to begin making way for a new $50 million pediatric
outpatient care facility.
Dewayne Andrews, M.D., Executive Dean of the College of Medicine, said the new
building “will not only enhance care, it will bring to Oklahoma still more
top physicians. In turn, they will bring with them new research and treatments
formerly unavailable” in Oklahoma.
Currently, most OU Children's Physicians offices are located within the expanses
of The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center. The new building will provide
one centralized location, where pediatric patients can visit with their doctors
outside the hospital setting. “This is a dream come true for those of us
who practice here,” said Kenneth Copeland, M.D., OU Children’s Physicians
Medical Director. “We’re looking forward to having a building … that
functions as a cutting-edge, outpatient care center for children – a place
where children come to get better.”
