Diabetes, particularly Type 2 (or acquired) diabetes, is a growing problem across the nation and worse in the state of Oklahoma where the per-capita incidence of diabetes is the greatest. About 200,000 of Oklahoma's residents have been diagnosed with diabetes, while up to 400,000 more are estimated to have pre-diabetes or to be significantly at-risk for developing diabetes.

In response to the tremendous need for improvements in the understanding of basic knowledge of diabetes, how to prevent diabetes, and how to best treat diabetes, the Oklahoma Diabetes Center was created. Accruing almost $30,000,000 to date, in the form of donations from the Children's Medical Research Institute, donations from private citizens, and grants from the state of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Diabetes Center is poised to become a state-of-the-art, national leader in diabetes research and treatment.

The Oklahoma Diabetes Center is comprised of three elements: the Child and Adult components in Oklahoma City and another component in Tulsa. Integrated througout all three components will be the work of research, provision of clinical services, education, and prevention. The Oklahoma Diabetes Center will develop and maintain synergistic working relationships with a Community Advisory Board and Oklahoma Native American communities.

The Child componet will be housed on the fourth floor of the new OU Children's Physician building, encompassing all of the pediatric program functions. For more information about the new building, please visit OU Children's Physician Outpatient Facility Project.
